چکیده
This paper investigates two behavioral properties of choices between gambles: branch independence and distribution independence. Branch independence is the assumption that probability-outcome branches that are identical in two gambles being compared should have no effect on preference order. In the test of distribution independence, two middle outcomes of fixed probability are sandwiched between two extreme outcomes, common to both gambles, whose probabilities are varied. Distribution independence requires that preference order should be independent of the probability distribution of these common outcomes. Distribution independence is implied by original prospect theory and the configural weight model of Birnbaum and McIntosh (1996). For both properties, patterns of violations are opposite those predicted by the inverse-S weighting function used in the model of cumulative prospect theory by Tversky and Kahneman (1992). q 1997 Academic Press

Dynamic decision tasks include important activities such as stock trading, air traffic control, and managing continuous production processes. In these tasks, decision makers may use outcome feedback to learn to improve their performance “on-line” as they participate in the task. We have developed a computational formulation to model this learning. Our formulation assumes that decision makers ac...

Much evidence outside the overconfidence literature indicates that confidence in a particular hypothesis is influenced more by evidence for and against that hypothesis than by evidence for and against the alternative. This article focuses on the impact that underweighting the alternative has on overconfidence and other related measures. Computer simulations showed that underweighting the altern...

This study used a three-person mixed-motive negotiation to (1) investigate the effects of asymmetrical caucusing (i.e., negotiations in which parties possess unequal opportunities to engage in discussion) on group negotiations and (2) assess potential explanations for these effects. Negotiators who were excluded from part of the discussion received a smaller share of rewards than those who rema...
متن کاملTwenty-Five Years of Groupthink Theory and Research: Lessons from the Evaluation of a Theory.
In this paper, we examine the historical development of the groupthink model and discuss recent responses to the body of empirical evidence amassed on the model. We conclude by articulating general lessons implied by the evolution of research on the groupthink model. Copyright 1998 Academic Press.
